Using AI to Uncover Inequalities: Save the Children’s Child Atlas
Save the Children, a global leader in advancing children’s rights, set out to build a platform that could reveal how inequality shapes the lives of children around the world. The challenge was connecting hundreds of indicators from multiple sources in meaningful, human terms.

Sociopúblico led the concept, design, and development of the Child Atlas, creating a digital ecosystem where users can explore over 240 indicators from 190 countries through intuitive visualizations, dynamic filters, and narrative summaries.
From the outset, we identified the potential for artificial intelligence to bridge the gap between complex data and human understanding. Working with Save the Children’s data experts and policy teams, we designed the platform’s architecture to integrate AI models capable of:
- Generating narrative summaries of indicator combinations through Natural Language Generation (NLG), turning statistical results into clear, readable insights.
- Identifying correlations and inequalities automatically across themes such as poverty, education, health, and child protection.
These features are especially useful for non-expert audiences and for users working in fast-paced policy or advocacy environments.
The result is an AI-enabled platform that not only visualizes data but explains it. Users can compare countries, analyze progress toward the SDGs, and uncover hidden inequities that affect children’s wellbeing.
By blending human-centered design, data visualization, and AI integration, Sociopúblico helped Save the Children transform global data into actionable intelligence—empowering those who work for children’s rights to act with greater clarity and impact.
